Last night we got a pretty good storm system that came through. Actually several storms. Jon, Jake and I had plans to go to the Rangers game. We were set to leave sometime around 6 and drop Abby off at Jon's parents. We decided to leave soon after Jon got off work to beat the storm. We decided to wait it out at Jon's parent's house and it was closer to the ballpark than our house. As we awaited the storm Jon, Jake and I went outside to watch the storm clouds move in. All at once Jon pointed out (saying not to alarm you but...) how the clouds were beginning to rotate right above us. That was a sign of a possible tornado. Right after he pointed that out I heard the sirens go off. He looked at me, nodded and I quickly rounded up the kids and went to the utility room. I sat there in the room with the kids while Jon and his dad went outside to watch the storm. Crazy, I know. Finally, the storm passed and we watched on tv how the Rangers game was postponed since the storm was headed that way. After about 1 1/2 hours we decided to head out to the game. We got there and it was still postponed but we decided to go in and get our food...it was dollar hot dog night so the boys wanted to stock up on their hot dogs. We went to out seats which were awesome but in the rain. It was drizzling at that time but I had my umbrella and Jake had a rain coat on. We sat there for a while looked at the drenched field and the cool John Deere tractors that were holding the tarp down. We finally decided to leave after being there for about 45 minutes only to hear over the PA that they were canceling the game due to more weather moving in. We took Jake to get some ice cream before we headed back to get Abby. We had a pretty fun night even though we didn't get to see the game. :)
On the way to get Abby Jon saw that he got a text from a friend of ours. He asked if we were ok? Jon didn't understand what that meant and so he texted back, why? He then proceeded to tell us that he knew that we were going to the Rangers game and that his wife tried to seek refuge from the storm at our house. I felt horrible so I called her up immediately only to find that she was in rush hour traffic when the storm hit. She got off the highway and tried to get home on the backroads. She said the wind was so hard that it was pushing her SUV and there was debris flying all around her. She tried one road only to find that it was partly blocked by a down tree. She knew she wouldn't make it home so she thought she'd come and wait out the storm in our house. She banged on the door but unfortunately we weren't there. Then the sirens went off and she was out in the open. She found one of our elderly neighbors outside watching the storm and sought shelter with her. The poor lady didn't even realize that there were bad storms around much less hear the sirens going off. Poor Shelley. I felt horrible for her. I later told her that I'd give her the code to get in our house in case we weren't home again. :) She told me that when we got home to be on the lookout for a large downed tree on our road. It wasn't blocking the road when we got home around 10pm. I guess the neighbors got out between systems and cut the tree to pieces and moved it back to their yard.
As I write this there are still storms coming through!
Here are some of the pics of debris. I think we fared well! Here is the tree from our neighbor's yard. A sign went down too!
Some shingles from a roof-don't think it's our as we saw our neighbor next door had some loose shingles on their roofHadn't had dry weather to check ours
Our side fence as well as other parts of our fence went down. Guess we know what we'll be doing this weekend!
