Our sweet little Abs got a bee sting last night. :( We were at the pool swimming when we noticed a bee following us around. We moved further in the water hoping to lose the bee but it seemed to think that Abby was just too sweet to pass up. We didn’t even realize it happened until Jon looked down in the water and noticed a dead bee floating next to him. He heard Abby whimper which made him think that she had been stung. We looked all over her and then Jon noticed on her tummy was the stinger. I quickly grabbed her and went to a lifeguard to get some help. I got it out of her and the lifeguard gave me an icepack to put on her. We soon took off and called the doctor’s office to see what else we needed to do for her. She told us to watch for swelling and trouble breathing as well as other indicators of an allergic reaction and gave us some home remedies to aid in getting the poison to be less worse. All in all Abby was a trooper. Had Jon not noticed the dead bee in the water we probably would have not realized that she was even stung. Like we said all she did was whimper. She never cried even when I took the stinger out! She’s a tough one!
Here’s a picture that Jon took with his phone of the sting.
Here are some of the home remedies and helpful hints that the nurse told us about:
1. Never use tweezers to take out the stinger. It releases more poison. Use a credit card our something dull, even your finger, and scrape it out. (Didn’t know that at first…wish I had.)
2. Make a paste with meat tenderizer and water and apply it to the wound. The tenderizer will break up the protein in the poison. (Didn’t have it on hand but now we do!)
3. You can also use baking soda and water and do the same. Wash off the site once the paste has dried on the area.
And more so for me, be calm. Listen to the words of your son who says, “Mom, just pray!” Gotta love our little prayer warrior! :)
By the way, Abby is fine. She never even skipped a beat! She even giggled when I put the paste on.
